To go hat in hand with my most recent writing regarding the extreme coincidence between the time it takes the Hebrew and Gregorian Calendars to 100% sync up again and the known age of our Universe, itself…? May I then present you with yet another extreme, nearly impossible sort of coincidence: The fact the glowing globes of the Sun and the Moon both appear to be identical in size when viewed from the Earth, despite the fact that they are so very different (One might almost say the difference in size is night and day!), indeed! This, never mind the understanding that, in order for that coincidence to exist just so, it requires several different unrelated and improbable variables just to take place as it does here.
Before we dive into the why, how and whatnot of that, however, I’d like to emphasize just why these bizarre coincidences are so notable and the causation behind my citing them in relation to the simulation hypothesis. Believe me, this isn’t done in a manner seeking to come off as much like some wild conspiracy theorist, picking and choosing whatever facts so stand out as to embolden one’s own argument – even if those facts have no relationship whatsoever to the argument one seeks to make.
Of course we should highlight the fact that, for every impossible coincidence, there are an infinite number of other possible coincidences which don’t exist. In other words, much like selective memory, we are indeed selecting true standouts because they stand out so. Likewise, they are, on average, few and far between.
But this does not dim or lessen their impact here, or their importance to the argument for a simulated reality. Because, like all those many “coulda been coincidences that weren’t, and never will be”…? These same coincidences should far more easily not exist than they should exist as we know them to. Therefore, that simple fact that they do exist is indeed most notable and striking… and an important factor in better focusing on the question of a simulated reality for us here and now. Because… all in all, if one were of a betting sort, the odds say rather definitively that they should not exist as a coincidence. Period.
Now then, since this is our second recent “bizarre coincidence” piece of writing, it also seems important to set up some guidelines here as to what better informs on the simulation hypothesis versus what does not. Now, for our purposes here…? First and foremost, they should be things that are otherwise so utterly impossible to conceive the probability of existing just so as to truly leave an impression upon discovery that there’s no real rhyme nor reason for them to exist as they do.
Just as importantly as that, however, if not even more so…? These should -must- involve matters more cosmic than anything else. It really cannot involve anything that humanity has any part in controlling or creating. The whole calendar alignment discussion, although calendars were indeed dreamt up/controlled by mankind…? It also draws from Earth’s orbit, the age of the universe, etc. Furthermore, no one with a hand in formulating those calendars had any inkling or notion of all the variables at play – much less any concern for or idea as to when two separate calendars would sync up because of their assorted idiosyncrasies and Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
This next example is even more cosmic than that, however, because it involves matters of our very reality itself on a celestial scale and concerning factors that, one must realize, any Creator of ours had a hand in yielding as that same Creator gave our world its own existence. These, being things that are genuinely on the cosmic level of existence – whether in being astronomical or on a fundamental existential scale. Physics, chemistry, astronomy… what all have you.
Why is this informative vis-a-vis the simulation hypothesis particularly, you might next inquire? The simple reason is that their existence, being exponentially more improbable than not, can be seen as something of a “sign” that all of this is far from random. Now, there are two ways we can look at it from the simulated standpoint: These are much like proverbial “bugs” as our reality was Created and made to exist, giving an indication (sort of like the great difficulty for our own technology to create truly random number generators at the present time) that ours is not a genuinely random, chaotic sort of existence, but rather exposing the more intentional & deliberate nature behind our universe as certain side effects associated with that intentional Creation of ours.
The second potential way of looking at these matters…? They are wholly intentional in existing as they do! These are things that were imparted as they were -the impossible being made possible- such that we might indeed one day turn to and look at them as evidence for our Creator in just such a light. That, without forcefully exposing Itself anew just so, nor by dramatically interfering in our own contemporary existence, we find things that allow us to better make up our own minds and determinations on our literal being.
As for me, myself…? Well, I’d like to think it’s a little bit of both, really: That they might be originally unintended side effects of a more simulated form of reality. But that, rather than being “removed” or altered in any such a way, they were rather “kept as they are” because they could play a positive role in guiding us closer to our Creator and nature of existence itself.
So that’s all the errata as to the why behind these particular writings of mine. Now then, as to the “what” we’re looking at this time around? Well, as I already said to start off with, today we are to look at the impossible coincidence that our Sun and our Moon both look identical in size from our Earth… despite being anything but! Greater still, however, is the fact that there is no rhyme nor reason for this happening as it does; there are plenty of cases with eerie astronomical standouts/oddities that really involve orbital resonances or the like – where the impossible is actually explained away as some basic consequence of nature and physics.
This, however, is not the case here. Understand this much, if anything at all: There is absolutely no reason why the Moon should be the size it is, yet at the distance it is from the Earth, and those same factors applied to the Sun and the Earth. In this particular instance here? It is entirely just a random, “impossible” coincidence without one single factor of physical laws that worked in the interests of creating such a coincidence. Zero.
Equally so, the fact this impossible coincidence involving a satellite world and a star take place on the one known world with intelligent consciousness living upon it. We didn’t have to go out to Saturn to say, “Hey! That’s a bizarre coincidence there with Titan and the Sun! It shouldn’t exist… but it does!” Rather, it is strictly limited to right here on this very world – indeed, no other such planetary body in the solar system enjoys such a coincidence as this, something which makes that coincidence all the more notable.
Furthermore still, that we have only one single satellite. Obviously, the odds would be exponentially increased were we instead like Jupiter or Saturn in possessing a countless many more satellite worlds trapped in our own planet’s orbit; where you’ve got, say, ten moons encircling your world, and one of them has a size relative to its distance that just so happens to result in it appearing the same size in the sky as the far more massive Sun that birthed our whole entire existence.
I should hope it to be rather obvious to you just now, but when you’re looking at only one such moon, the odds of all these factors existing as they do just so (and on the one world with life upon it to take notice of such a thing, no less!) skyrockets to truly astronomically absurd levels, indeed!
Consider the implications of this coincidence; much the same as how we happen to know it to be 100% true: In a total Solar Eclipse, the two come together in lining up… and just so happen to make for an absolutely perfect match! Were any of the many variables involved any different, the Sun would not have that perfect “blotting out” by the Moon, but rather the Sun would be greatly engulfed by or have the Moon appear as a tiny little dot traversing across its own giant face in our sky.
So this special coincidence has resulted in something that has astounded and created ripples across all of human history, as our ancestors looked to the sky during a majestic total eclipse of the Sun; creating, just as it did, many important ramifications for ancient cultures, mythologies, societies and historical developments happening as they did whereby mankind sought to explain, understand, or receive “divine messages”/took various actions based on these beautiful rare events.
But the importance found in their being identical in size is hardly limited only to the exceptionally rare events of total solar eclipses! For, once upon a time, before street lamps and the like came to be, that Moon of ours served as the sole nighttime light source for our long ago ancestors: A very real, quite literal “nighttime Sun”, indeed!
As a result of that aspect here, consider the… almost “comfort”, I suppose, of ancient and primitive peoples having their two different cosmic light sources being of the same size. In our modern electrical age it can be all too easy to forget, but that beautiful full Moon was once the very literal nighttime Sun. One can thusly imagine it being far easier for such nomadic and tribal populations to gaze upwards and see that both their daytime and nighttime suns were glowing globes of light utterly identical in size at their peak. All the same, we can all too easily envision that the fact they were identical drove many over the millennia to an understanding of God Creating our world; that the balance and harmony showed just exactly what I proposed earlier: Evidence of a decidedly non-chaotic, hardly randomized sort of existence, but instead yielding signs of an immaculate design, order and structure to Creation itself.
Now, if you shouldn’t be all that well versed in astronomy and the like, you might still be wondering why these two disparate bodies do indeed appear to be the same size from our own meager Earthly vantage point. In this, unlike most all else we might talk about on these pages, it is actually quite exceedingly simple: The Moon just so happens to be approximately 400 times smaller than the Sun, yet the Sun is roughly 400 times further away from the Earth than the Moon is.
And that, right there, is it. The Moon also just so happens to be exactly where it is in relation to the Earth – as close as it is, even a small variation in its own distance from the Earth would immediately and irrevocably shatter this particular coincidence of illusion. Instead, the Moon would either appear much larger or vastly smaller than the Sun by just a tiny fractional adjustment in its distance from the Earth.
But none of that is the case, and so is it rendered a moot point. Furthermore, that this particular alignment happens as it does in the here and now: The Sun changes its size in our sky over its existence – it’ll blossom and grow bigger and bigger as it runs out of hydrogen fuel for its nuclear fusion furnace. The Moon’s orbit is likewise pulled closer and closer to Earth over time by our world’s drawing force of gravity. Now yes, this particular resonance in apparent size will last a mighty long time, indeed – dinosaurs themselves might have glanced up and seen something quite similar during an eclipse – and yet, it does not refute the fact that it’s very much also taking place now, as humanity dawns, and all of it on the very same world that same humanity dawned on.
In the first paragraph, I mentioned the multitude of variables that play into creating this particular coincidence of ours. Allow me to list them out for you such that you might get a better inkling of just how exceptional of a coincidence this one right here truly is:
- Those include the fact we have a natural satellite, and only a single one moon at that
- The size it just so happened to become upon forming as it did.
- Where it ended up around the Earth.
- The size of our own Sun.
- Where the Earth ended up sitting around that same Sun.
- The where we ourselves just so happen to be, upon that very same Earth (and not, say, dwelling upon the Moon or on Mars).
- And finally, the when: Meaning right now, as all those variables line up in order to impart these two celestial bodies as appearing the same size from our world’s surface, when this won’t always be (and hasn’t always been) the case!
I might also add this aspect to be taken into consideration just now: The fact this same coincidence doesn’t exist anywhere else in the Solar System, despite numerous planets and hundreds of natural satellites, but rather on a world with only a single natural satellite that also houses one special little species of lifeform upon its surface.
Whew! Well, those are surely a lot of factors that all come into resonance with one another, in order to definitively yield a truly improbable impossibility being made into a striking reality for us all!
Ultimately, I would therefore like to espouse the belief that this impossible coincidence that shouldn’t have been is as it most certainly is for a very good reason: It serves as yet another example of how ours is hardly some random, chaotic sort of existence. Rather, it shows a very deliberate and intentional work of design behind it all. It works to better illuminate and add credence to the supposition that ours is indeed a simulated reality – for indeed, one would likely expect such freak occurrences and statistical impossibilities made possible as the result more of something similar to our own more… “automated” technological processes. Where statistical, mathematical improbabilities exist more so than ones more “basic” and deliberate.
For that is exactly what this right here happens to be: A purely mathematical impossibility whereupon the Moon stands 400 times smaller but 400 times closer to the Earth than does the Sun. As such, I cannot imagine I am alone upon making this realization that it would sure seem to be possible that it’s a consequence of ours being a simulated reality, made as it was by our Creator. In the end, it stands as just yet another small straw serving as evidence towards that Simulated notion… amidst an ever increasing bundle of them, one that inevitably builds enough to “break the camel’s back,” as it were, to result in more firmly accepting such simulated ideas as being a simulated /reality/ for us all.
In closing, should you like to read more about this topic… or don’t fully take my word for it that there is no reason that these variables exist just exactly as they do; absent any scientific explanation that would explain away nor improve the odds for this happening precisely as it does…? May I then offer up the following links to articles discussing this very same topic, albeit from a decidedly non-simulated hypothesis sort of lens:
Of particular significance, we find the forthcoming quote that comes from this link:
“EarthSky asked Myles Standish about the similarity in the size of Earth’s moon and sun, as seen from Earth. He is a mathematical astronomer and a former professor at Yale University. He worked for CalTech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has published over 300 articles, mostly in the field of solar system dynamics and celestial mechanics. He said this similarity is unique among the planets and moons that make up our local family in space, our solar system. In other words, it doesn’t occur with any other planets and moons in our immediate neighborhood of space.”
In summarizing our previous piece: Since the dawn of man, we’ve always asked ourselves, “Why?” Why -exactly- are we here, to begin with? What are we doing here? How have we come to be here?! Simply who we are… at all? All of those are very good questions, indeed! Equally so, all of those many different answers applied to them have remain unchanged -by and large- for countless centuries, at the very absolute least! Most of them even date back multiple millennia!
And yet… just this past century has brought with it change quite unlike anything ever before witnessed by anyone. Electricity? Transportation, with cars, planes and trains? No less, the dawn of the nuclear age? Then, the past couple of decades alone have rapidly seen such gains become exponential in magnitude- now, only every few years our technologies are totally and completely transforming the all of everything. Think about the previous 20 years: Computers. The Internet. Cellular phones. Genetics and DNA.
Then, over but the last handful of them: Tablets beget mobile devices; the Internet becomes available everywhere, no less coming at broadband speeds! Smart devices beget the Smart Home; where now we can turn simple lights off and on using any mobile device, from anywhere! Our digital devices? Not only do they currently audibly talk to us, but so too understanding us whenever we speak to them! Artificial intelligences surely aren’t very far off right now, heralding a truly unprecedented new world quite unlike any before.
At their core, these ideas represent an alternative view of various faith-based concepts; all the while, it’s also very much a view that remains all but nonexistent in today’s world – no matter where, to whom or for what one might themselves turn. Likewise, they represent beliefs that are nothing I myself see as exceedingly revolutionary, nor anything quite so bizarre as to defy either categorization as or harmonious coexistence fitting within previous such religious thought.
Rather, I feel all of this to be only a natural evolution of our most fundamental questions or cultural/societal tenets. Somewhat crudely stated? With aspects of religion, science, technology and philosophy, it works to take what came before, along with what currently is, and to blend them both together; allowing our present understandings and level of advancement to inform, transform and, just perhaps, even somehow redefining things decidedly ancient or apocryphal in nature.
Indeed, perhaps the most important question for us to start off with considering…? Why is there a complete absence of anything remotely approaching these sorts of ideas – despite our now going on a century or better since first we might’ve begun to inch ourselves toward such (quantum) leaps forward?
We’re now beginning to get much deeper into things, as this post contains one of what I feel is the most central ideas to this entire body of work: Perceiving the all of human civilization much the same as any other singular maturing entity. Meaning…? It progressively grows and advances, maturing all the while, in being able to stand as something fundamentally changed from what it once was.
An idea of a linearly+progressively evolving -maturing- human civilization should not be seen as some excuse or desperate bid to explain away or dismiss certain aspects of older religious teachings. Rather, it is evidenced in every single other aspect of Creation itself: Human beings… or, for that matter, all known life. Stars and planets, alike. The whole universe!
For all things in our humble little slice of reality, there is both a time to be born and a time to die. In between those two, absolutely nothing exists in some static state, wholly unchanging all the while. To expect that Creator would imbue human civilization with such an impossible trait found nowhere else seems most irrational, just on its face.
We -being humanity itself, far and wide; large and incalculable- are much like a single living organism in many ways (as I’ve already established). I’d now like to take a moment to step back and expand further upon this notion, trying to visualize what it really means to us, before once more moving onward.
Imagine all of our history, entailing all men, women and children who have ever walked this earth, looking up and asking ‘Why?’ Imagine it – all of them, and us, as one. Human culture, human knowledge, human wisdom, human understanding, human society, and yes, human religion. It is far too easy to take a microscopic view, seeing ourselves as singular – to imagine that we are little different as individuals from Johan the sailor two centuries prior. We were born, we were kids, we learned, we aged, became adults, began careers and families, age further still, then pass from this world. In the end, we all end up the same.
Belief is a funny thing – our faith being singularly unique throughout all of Creation as something found solely in we human beings. There’s truly nowhere else where we might also observe anything endeavoring to look up and ask of itself, “Why? How…? What?!?”, let alone anything capable of knowing any such answers to those inquiries they might so deign to make! And yet, among those individuals found to exist in the many sorts of cultures and religions that we do in fact know for ourselves? Such beliefs have also come to mean so countless many wildly different things, to so very many widely different peoples – no less, ones that are spread across the whole wide world over!
So then, all that this work ultimately represents is my offering up what those beliefs have come to mean to me personally just now, and absolutely nothing more than that; existing only as but a meager reflection of that which I myself have come to believe is true in this life of ours so far.
Next up on our agenda? One might begin to wonder, “Why doesn’t God step in and make His wishes known to us directly, just as He once did so long ago?” In my eyes, this is an utter absurdity for anyone to realistically expect – it would completely, irrevocably disrupt our entire existence. It would also be exactly the same as a parent stepping in to “reparent” their 50-year old adult child… no less, with that parent’s refusing to step back, let go and allow their offspring to ‘sink or swim’ doubtlessly being responsible for whatever his or her present predicaments may be; those problems which require such reparenting, even at the half century mark! What’s more, God simply doesn’t need to do any such thing! – most certainly not when He can influence and direct the very same desired outcomes, only doing so from “behind the scenes,” as it were.
There appears to be a good many here in our world today who seem to expect that, in their mind, God’s existence is somehow disproven by the lack of any (relatively recent) direct interactions with us or our forebears. All the more, many a conartist or cultist in such modern times have outright declared that, if they themselves aren’t God and/or Jesus Christ reborn, then God at the very least directly communicates to them – and to them alone! Both of these views -that God must either prove His divine existence to us by way of direct interaction, or that God really is somehow speaking to only one out of seven billion worth- are utterly incorrect, in my estimation… most especially not when God -that higher power/force- doesn’t need to do anything of the sort!
Prior to moving on to the now, there should first be a rumination on the before – the what and why of various religious dogmas the world over – before we ourselves can move forward and beyond. Let us begin by an examination on some of the marked changes unfurling over the past century and change which has radically altered our understanding of who and what we are, and where it is that we exist.
Now imagine yourself in such a state as we might have been in so very long ago, when that divine Creator provided us with His teachings, wisdom and guidance. In other words, what does this idea about humanity having been in an infantile state actually mean to us?
Try to picture the world back then, right alongside you yourself – much as you’d be without any of the fancy schooling and knowledge that we presently enjoy. It’s hard, if not impossible, to actually try and do so, isn’t it just? To shake off the decades of being filled with the gifted knowledge of the entire human race made over many countless millennia – our uncanny ability… our downright obsession!- with self-discovery, exploration and comprehending any real understanding.
As I’ve already established here, we should see the collective of humanity as but a single entity: Our very civilization itself, something that’s best perceived as aging and maturing exactly the same way as does any other dynamic living thing! Each different generation of mankind? Taken as being just like a year in the life of one person!
Yet just as with all things in life, proper perspective and understanding is essential. In moving forward, however, we must also remember to continue looking all around us: Including where we came from before. All the more, it is my firmest belief that the many different sacred works and religious beliefs we possess emerged directly from our true Creator – no less, likely to be the last direct communications our world will receive from that divinity for a long time still to come.
Even so, we ought to remember the fact that the so-called “intended audience” for these works was one for whom the Earth still stood at the very center of all Creation itself! All things existing in all places – everything and everywhere, for everyone – encircled and so orbitted this marvelous little pale blue dot we all lived, loved and inevitably died upon. The mere idea of outer space, some endless dark and frozen vacuumous abyss which separates all those (equally unknown kinds of) celestial bodies (being other stars, planets, black holes, dark matter or energies, along with whole other galaxies – and so very much more!) from one another… well, it simply wasn’t so much as an idea to anyone just yet, nary even a single soul!
The reason responsible as to why, despite having so very many different religions around the globe today, there’s actually only but a single God who’s directly responsible for giving us those numerous systems of belief? In only but two words: Sparking differentiation.
God provided us with so many faiths, only in order to produce stark differences across our Earthly cultures and societies -throughout every corner of the world- over several centuries & millennia. He did so such that we might become ever more distinct and unique from one another on an individual level, therefore satisfying His desire to Create and cultivate new sentient consciousness (ones ultimately joining with His plane of existence upon our mortal death in this plane).
Yet, while certainly accomplishing those ends, there was also a second reason here for giving us as many faiths as we ultimately received from God: The dynamics between different cultural and ethnic groups of human beings; those outcomes produced by way of their interactions with each other, and the near infinite societal/scientific/technological contributions derived from such interplay (which is also the bulk of what this particular piece will be dealing with, given that the former aspect hardly requires any greater elaboration than the preceding provided).
Now although there have indeed already been “unifying” sects, churches… even whole religions? If only by and large, none of those have existed in such a way as to give truly equal validity to all the major established worldwide systems of belief; never before having been anything presenting the notion that all such faiths are equally correct and valid, let alone any genuine supposition holding that all of them came to exist in our world from the very same higher power. There’s seems a very good reason for that absence: At least in theory, this might seem to be something of an outright impossibility!
It should surely appear the height of absurdity to say that the divinity of Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam, Shintoism, Judaism, and countless more are all quite literal as a deity; with each and every last one of them having come from the same God/divine entity/higher power/what have you. To support such a supposition under the backdrop of existing theologies? One would simply have to be either delusional or something of an unrepentant polytheist – and should the latter be the case, well… have we not just annihilated all the monotheistic religions from the mix, right off the bat?
So this is where I attempt to bring this entire portion the rest of the way “home“, as it were – finally drawing everything in this section together. A critical understanding to keep in mind hereabouts should be the fact that ours is a diverse world filled with many wildly divergent cultures (never mind, on purely an individual level, how vastly differing we each are!) What’s more, the relationship those same cultures play with one another, and the countless contributions they each bring to the table that is the all of human civilization, itself…? Remove only but a single one of those from the equation, and we’d be left with a world that most certainly wouldn’t so much as merely resemble what it actually is here today!
So of course we might wonder why, given an omnipotent divinity capable of all things under the Sun, there’s no singularly dominant faith on this Earth… nor has there ever been such a thing; something that’s been enjoyed by all peoples the whole world over, at any one particular moment in time. The explanation behind such a void is actually rather deceptively simple, in point of fact, and something that was wholly intentional on God’s own part thereabouts.
Now, just try and envision that hypothetical world… one in possession of only but a singly dominant religion. Would it not be the most blandly homogeneous of places, with universal sameness abounding and individuals nary anything besides fundamental clones of one another? Had we therefore been given but a lone single such faith by God, our cultures and societies would be all but identical to each other just now; the all of human civilization nothing save for varying shades of greys (compared to the fantastically diversified rainbow it presently consists of).
